Denver Metro Village

Denver Metro Village - Fly Through

DMV is an existing senior housing community located on West Colfax. The project involves four-story addition that adds 19 new units and a new four story parking garage with 180 new sparking spaces and ground floor retail. The project also includes comprehensive renovations to the existing 18 story high rise tower that houses 190 existing units. This complex project required extensive coordination with residents and agencies.

When living in HUD-related buildings you can count on the staff going into your apartment OFTEN. They do inspections, check for bed bugs, fire alarms, water pipes, electrical, etc. It's part of being a tenant. The shooter in the 2013 incident didn't like that

My question would be, "How did he even had a gun inside the building? Mom's lived in a few HUD-related buildings, in Colorado and elsewhere and they don't allow guns. It's even part of the move-in application process."

My disabled mom had gotten on the waiting list for this low-income senior community. She got approved and then we started watching the crime reports

We knew it wasn't the best area of town, but felt inside the secure building would be safe. Then the "burglary of a residence without forced entry, Wednesday Jan. 10" showed up on the reports

That was enough for us to say, "Nope, not moving there"

It's too bad, because the part she was to live in was newly built and the staff were nice

That's when we found about report about a previous tenant in 2013 shot the manager and then killed himself in front of other tenants!

Great concept, but I see a few problems with it What about the Disabled?

Culdesac YouTube

Great concept, but I see a few problems with it

My mom's disabled and would LOVE to live in a "community" like that, where there is a sense of community

She uses a rollator walker to get around. There is NO WAY she could do stairs, even if she got someone to carry the walker up the stairs. She has Vertigo as a result of a few TBI's (Traumatic Brain Injuries - abuse related) and can't look up/down without getting dizzy and sees double out of her left eye

She gets around if she has an elevator, etc. She has her groceries delivered. She meets them on the main floor with her large cart so they don't have to carry them up multiple stairs or via the elevator

Culdesac does have (2) WalMart's within 4 miles of them for grocery delivery, but they wouldn't be open to carrying groceries up the stairs, because of no elevator and needing to make multiple trips

Having multi-generational housing is good for the older generation. It keeps them young and movivated.

Having multi-generational housing is good for the younger generation. It teaches them the concept of "family"

Isolating the younger generation just teaches them more of "Me, me, me"

Definitely creating division and less about "community"

The only way mom could live at Culdesac would be on the main floor. For a disabled person being on the first floor can also be isolating. There's no view to look out at when they can't, for whatever reason, leave their apartment

From what I can gather from this video and their website they cater to a MUCH younger generation and it's not the disabled

Isn't that discrimination?

Isn't that against the Fair Housing Act of Arizona?

American Dream Stolen By Amazon

American Dream Stolen By Amazon
Arrived Homes, a real estate investment platform backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has been intensifying its acquisition of affordable single-family rental homes across the U.S. With over $60 million in funded properties, the platform offers individuals the chance to invest in rental homes, managing these assets for passive income and appreciation. Amidst rising rental demands, Amazon's Founder is investing in Arrived Homes and expanding into numerous U.S. cities, attracting significant investments, including high-profile investors like Bezos. This trend reflects the growing interest in affordable single-family rentals due to increasing rents and the rising cost of homeownership, pointing to a continual rise in the rental market's appeal.

American Dream Stolen By Amazon

Jeff Bezos-Backed Arrived Homes Surpasses 200 Single-Family Investment Properties Funded
The fractional real estate investment platform Arrived Homes hit a major milestone last month – funding its 200th single-family home. The company has now funded 203 investment properties with a total value of more than $75 million.

Homeless Woman Cycles Between Streets And Hotels After Husband Dies

Homeless Woman Cycles Between Streets And Hotels After Husband Dies
At 58, Ella's story is a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. Just last night, she braved the biting cold, sleeping outside in a chilling 30 degrees with the wind adding to the risk of death. Fortunately, she found a brief respite in a hotel, where we met her.

Life took a turn for Ella after her husband passed away. With her disability preventing her from working, she's been struggling to make ends meet. Her disability income barely covers a few hotel nights, after which she's often left to rely on the kindness of others for shelter and food. The cycle of short-term hotel stays is a harsh reality for many with limited income, making the dream of renting an apartment seem unattainable. Weekly-rate hotels often become a trap.

Ella's situation isn't unique. Senior homelessness is on the rise, just as housing costs continue to skyrocket. It's a looming crisis – a perfect storm of homelessness. We need to take action to reach out to our legislators and advocate for solutions to the affordable housing crisis for Ella and countless others in her situation.

Ella's hotel stay is provided by Paul Kruse. Paul has helped 1,800 homeless families and individuals this year. Both Paul and his wife work tirelessly to help homeless people in the Wentzville area http://firststepbackhome.net

My response to the video
I'm sorry she is homeless, BUT there are ways she can help herself. She has to want to!

Do whatever it takes to get to the city. She can find more resources there if family can't/won't help.

Apply to Housing (LOW INCOME charges 30%+ of one's income), medical, food, etc. Some of them even provide meal programs depending on one's age.

Low income housing communities usually have buses to take them grocery shopping or there is always home delivery.

There are government agencies that provide telephones FOR FREE with unlimited text and service.

And the more she talks negatively the more negativity one will get out of her life.

She's ALREADY on disability and with that she can access MANY programs. GET TO THE CITY!

P.S. Mom and I were homeless as a result of abuse, so we know what it's like. I was 19 months old at the time. We went to a shelter, because we didn't have family.

We pulled ourselves up by the boot straps and did whatever it took. Mom is disabled as a result of the abuse, living in low income housing (charges 30% of her income for rent).

She got dental care through the local dental school. Bad teeth releases toxins into one's body making one sick. Mom got dentures as a result of the abuse.

And mom has CPTSD from the abuse. So, she does have mental health challenges. She's fought hard to overcome her challenges.

Yes, it's difficult to ask your adult children, BUT one has to overcome their pride. Ella's got income. She could help with rent. IF they find out her troubles and she refused to ask for help they could be MAD!

ASK!

Call Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (303-293-2217) and see if they have Rural Initiative locations in her state or know of any resources.

https://www.coloradocoalition.org/ruralinitiatives

And lastly...1-2 minutes into the video, and then throughout, you can see her hands. It's OBVIOUS she's getting French Manicures. Those cost about $35 or more. STOP GETTING MANICURES! Start saving that money.

Things that are ruining the U.S. Housing Market

HOA's Are Ruining Affordable Neighborhood Homes
The complex world of Homeowners Associations (HOAs), describes them as both a necessary and problematic aspect of modern homeownership. The increasing prevalence of HOAs in the U.S., noting that they often serve to maintain property values but can also exert significant, unchecked power over residents, often with discriminatory undertones. The origins of HOAs, their role in maintaining property values, and the challenges homeowners face in dealing with overly strict or arbitrary rules in the most affordable neighborhoods. The legal difficulties in contesting HOA decisions, as courts and states generally adopt a hands-off approach. The broader implications of HOAs in terms of privatization and governance, suggest a need for more regulation and government oversight to address their unchecked power and potential for abuse.

How Texas HOAs Are Keeping Low-Income Renters Out

A state law will prohibit homeowners associations from discriminating against tenants using rental vouchers. The practice is more widespread than lawmakers realized.

Under the new law, homeowners associations in Texas will be prohibited from discriminating against tenants based on their source of income. Passed after public reaction to the Providence HOA's policy, the reform is a rare win for Texas tenants.
